Mount Airy man arrested in Virginia for being a fugitive

Officials said a Mount Airy man was arrested and charged with being a fugitive Aug. 23 in Virginia.

The Mount Airy News reported that Joseph Lee Duncan, 39, of Badgett Avenue, was booked into the Surry County Jail under a $10,000 bond.

Stokes Co. sex offender arrested in Arizona

STOKES CO, N.C. -- A registered sex offender from Stokes County was arrested July 2 in Mohave County, Arizona.

The Stokes News reported that Rodney Dwayne Carter failed to verify his address as required by law.

The paper reported that a deputy went to Carter’s last known residence and determined he had not been there for several months.

Stokes Deputies Conduct Sex Offender Project

The Stokes County Sheriff’s Office recently conducted a two-day operation tracking registered sex offenders in the area, according to the Stokes News.

The purpose of “Operation Northern Border” was to make sure all the county's sex offenders where were they are supposed to be.

The paper did not provided details on the project's results. Some sex offenders committed crimes in Stokes County and others relocated there.

The operation is conducted by the United States Marshals Service along with local authorities across the US.

“We will work with other law enforcement agencies and always be ready to assist other agencies in making sure that sex offenders obey and comply with all sex offender laws and regulations," said Stokes County Sheriff Mike Marshall, according to the paper.

Sex offenders must register their addresses with the sheriff's office of the county in which they reside under North Carolina state law.

Nine Charged With Drugs in Stokes County

Nine people face marijuana-related charges from the Stokes County Sheriff's Office.

Timothy Lynn Brady, Toni Carter Brady, Brittany Ranae Webster, Gary Vincent Steele II, Veronica Banks Mena, Orlander Deshea Cuthrell, Lukas Allen Laycock, Walter Dalton Buck and Timothy Michael Banks are among the charged.The bonds range from $500 to $7,500. Timothy Lynn Brady was given the highest bond at $7,500 unsecured.

Timothy Lynn Brady has been charged with possession with the felony intent to manufacture a schedule VI drug, felony manufacturing a schedule VI, felony maintaining a drug house and misdomenor possession of drug paraphernalia.

Deputies did not say whether or not these arrests were part of a sting operation.

Stokes County Man Arrested for Assault

A Sandy Ridge man was arrested Tuesday after being wanted by deputies for assault with a deadly weapon.

Wayne Everette McBride, 43, had arrest warrants issued for injuring a person in Sandy Ridge.

No further information was provided.

Project: Connect the Dots Finishes Grant Initiative

A four-year grant-based effort looking at drug abuse in Surry and Stokes ended Thursday, according to the Mount Airy News.

Project: Connect the Dots was a $525,000 campaign funded by a Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant. It was designed to raise awareness about alcohol dangers and lower alcohol-related driving incidents.

Officials also tried to determine the community's biggest concerns about alcohol, the paper reported.

They discovered that many people believe drinking and driving carries a low risk of getting caught and people believe alcohol is safer than drugs.

Walnut Cove Man Charged With Having $192,000 Worth of Marijuana

A Walnut Cove man is expected to appear in court July 20 after deputies allegedly found $192,000 worth of marijuana at his residence June 15, according to the Stokes News.

William Ray Shinault, 43, has been charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell and/or deliver marijuana; manufacture marijuana; maintain drug dwelling; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Law enforcement officials found and seized 64 marijuana plants growing in and around Shinault’s yard, the paper reported. The plants measured between one to five feet tall each.

He is being held on a $15,000 secured bond.
